Why Muay Thai Shorts Are Built Differently

MMA shorts are built tighter and longer, since grapplers need coverage that won't ride up during ground work. Muay Thai shorts go the other way — shorter, with wide leg openings that let a fighter throw a high kick or knee strike without any fabric resistance.

Fabric Choice

Satin is the traditional choice, with a classic shiny look and smooth drape that moves naturally during kicks, though it wears out faster and often needs hand-washing. Polyester-spandex blend is the modern, practical choice — it wicks moisture, dries quickly, and holds up to machine washing far better than satin. Microfiber satin splits the difference.

Inseam Length and Leg Opening

Muay Thai shorts run shorter than MMA shorts, typically 10 to 14 inches at the inseam. A 12–13 inch length is the most common academy standard. The leg opening itself is wide — often 12 to 16 inches around — which is the real functional difference from MMA shorts.

Waistband and Construction

Muay Thai shorts typically use a wide elastic waistband, sometimes with a drawstring, built for comfort during clinch work. Side slits run high, often 6 to 8 inches, to support the extreme hip mobility the sport demands.

Ordering Process

  1. Initial contact — share your gym name, quantity, preferred fabric (satin, polyester, or microfiber), and logo files.
  2. Design mockup — a visual mockup within a couple of days, with revisions included.
  3. Quote and deposit — an itemized quote and a partial deposit, commonly 50%.
  4. Production — typically two to three weeks.
  5. Pre-shipment approval — photos of finished units before shipping.
  6. Delivery and inspection — check unit count, sizing, and fabric quality on arrival.

Care Instructions

Satin: hand-wash when possible, or a gentle machine cycle in cold water. Air-dry only. Polyester blends: machine-washable in cold water, turned inside out. Both should be washed promptly after training for general hygiene.

Frequently Asked Questions

What fabric is best for custom Muay Thai shorts?

Satin gives the traditional, authentic look but wears faster and often needs hand-washing. A polyester-spandex blend is more practical for daily training — machine-washable, fast-drying, and more durable.

How are Muay Thai shorts different from MMA shorts?

Muay Thai shorts are shorter and have much wider leg openings, built to allow unrestricted high kicks and knee strikes. MMA shorts run longer and tighter for grappling.

What's the minimum order for custom Muay Thai shorts?

Our minimum is 50 units. Per-unit pricing drops as the order gets larger, similar to other custom fight gear.
