Butterfly Guard: Sweeps, Hooks & the Marcelo System

What Butterfly Guard Is

Butterfly guard is a seated guard. You sit upright with both feet hooked inside your opponent's inner thighs. Your hooks act like levers. They lift and off-balance your opponent instead of just blocking them.

This guard rewards posture and grip fighting. It punishes passivity. If you sit still, you get flattened. If you stay active, you control the exchange.

The Marcelo Garcia System

Marcelo Garcia built an entire game around butterfly guard. He combined arm drags, hook sweeps, and guillotines into one connected system. His approach proved the guard works against much larger opponents.

The Core Sweep

  1. Sit up and establish an underhook or arm drag grip.
  2. Load your opponent's weight onto one of your hooks.
  3. Fall to the side while lifting with that hook.
  4. Follow the roll and come up in top position.

Grip Options

  • Underhook. The strongest control, and the setup for most sweeps.
  • Arm drag. Pulls their arm across, opening the back.
  • Double sleeve or wrist control. Useful for no-gi and for stalling their posture.

Common Mistakes

  • Lying flat on your back. Butterfly guard only works seated.
  • Hooking too shallow, so your lifts have no power.
  • Forgetting upper-body grips and relying on the hooks alone.

Once butterfly feels natural, our X-guard guide and single leg X guide are the standard next steps in the same system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my butterfly guard keep getting flattened?

Butterfly guard only works from a seated position. If you lie back, your hooks lose all lifting power and your opponent can pin your shoulders to the mat.

Does butterfly guard work in no-gi?

Yes, and it is one of the most popular no-gi guards. You swap sleeve and collar grips for underhooks and wrist control, but the hook mechanics stay the same.

What is the difference between butterfly guard and the butterfly sweep?

Butterfly guard is the seated position with hooks inside the thighs. The butterfly sweep is one specific attack from that position, the core lift-and-roll technique the guard is built around.

Is butterfly guard good for beginners?

Yes. It teaches grip fighting and hip mobility early, and it works against opponents of any size, which makes it a common starting guard alongside closed guard.
